Varanasi rewards time more than money. The four things it is known for — the temple, the aarti, the sunrise river and Sarnath — fit into two days only if the hours are used deliberately, and the queue at Kashi Vishwanath is the variable that decides everything else.

Kashi Vishwanath
1 hour on an allotted slot, 3–6 hours on general darshan

Ganga aarti, Dashashwamedh
Arrive 45 minutes early; ceremony runs 45 minutes
The evening ceremony, around 18:15 in winter and 19:00 in summer.

Walking the galis between 07:30 and 09:30, before the crowds.

What a brochure would not tell you
No vehicle of any size reaches Kashi Vishwanath, and the general darshan queue genuinely runs three to six hours on a weekend or festival day. Anyone selling you a Varanasi itinerary that does not mention either of those has not planned your day.
When to come
October to March. November and December are the best weather and the busiest, because of Dev Deepawali on 24 November 2026 and the wedding season. May and June are punishing — 45°C is common and the stone steps hold the heat.
