On Kartik Purnima every ghat from Assi to Rajghat is lit with clay lamps. It is the most beautiful night of the Varanasi year and the worst one to improvise. The ghat approaches close to vehicles from the afternoon — this itinerary is built around that fact rather than around wishing it away.

The plan, hour by hour
Day 1
Dev Deepawali evening
Night in Varanasi
- By 13:00Arrive and check in. Come earlier if you can — roads tighten through the afternoon.
- 15:30Vehicle positions at the drop point chosen for your ghat. Barricades go up around now.
- 16:00Walk in. 20 to 40 minutes depending on which ghat you are heading for.
- 17:15Lamps are lit at dusk across the whole ghat front.
- 18:30Ganga aarti at Dashashwamedh, run at festival scale.
- 20:00Laser and fireworks sequence over the river.
- 21:30Walk out to the agreed pickup point once the crush thins. The driver stays contactable throughout.
Day 2
The morning after
- 06:00Sunrise boat. The river is calm and the ghats are empty — a deliberate contrast to the night before.
- 08:30Breakfast and checkout.
- 11:00Kashi Vishwanath if you hold a slot, otherwise Sarnath.
- 15:00Drop at the airport or station.

Who this is not for
Anyone unwilling to walk. Realistic vehicle drop points sit well back from the river and the last 20 to 40 minutes are on foot, in a crowd. No operator can drop you at Dashashwamedh that night; if one says they can, they are selling you a story.
