A seat on a traditional wooden rowing boat, positioned off the main ghat stretch. The cheapest legitimate way onto the water on the night.

Crowded, and you sit where you are put. On a normal night the same boat is a few hundred rupees a seat — you are paying for scarcity on one date, not for a better boat.

Shared motor boat

Per seat, 20–40 to a boat

A seat on a larger motorised boat that can reposition along the ghat front rather than holding one spot.

Moves more, so you see more of the lit stretch. Louder, and the engine competes with the aarti if you are close in.

Bajra double-decker, per seat

A seat on the traditional flat-bottomed two-deck bajra. Upper deck gives the clean sightline people picture when they imagine this night.

The most limited inventory in the city and the first thing to sell out. A lower-deck seat is markedly worse than an upper-deck one for the same money — ask which you are buying.

The part that is not the boat

A boat gets you onto the water. It does not get you to the water. The ghat approaches are barricaded and closed to vehicles from the afternoon of the festival, so you are walking twenty to forty minutes from wherever your vehicle can stop, then finding your boarding point in a crowd after dark. Book the boat and the vehicle together, and agree the boarding point in daylight.
