On Kartik Purnima the whole ghat front from Assi to Rajghat is lit with clay lamps. It is the most photographed night of the Varanasi year — and the one where planning badly costs you the evening entirely.

What actually happens on the night
At dusk, lamps are lit in rows down every ghat. The Ganga aarti at Dashashwamedh runs at a far larger scale than its nightly version, and a laser and fireworks sequence follows over the river later. The lit ghats hold for two to three hours before the lamps start to go out.
The part other itineraries leave out
The ghat approaches are barricaded and closed to vehicles from the afternoon. No van, car or tempo traveller is dropping anyone at Dashashwamedh that night, whatever is promised at the point of sale. Our packages name the drop point in advance, chosen for the ghat you are heading to, and build the twenty-to-forty-minute walk into the evening rather than letting you discover it at a police barricade with elders in the group.
Boat or steps
From the water you see the full sweep at once. From the steps you get the aarti and the atmosphere but only your immediate stretch. Boats are booked separately from the package, sell out first, and rise sharply in price as the date closes. If you want one, say so when you book the package rather than a fortnight later.
Book by early October
Six to eight weeks out for hotels and vehicles. After that the question stops being what you want and becomes what is left.

- When is Dev Deepawali 2026?
- Tuesday 24 November 2026, on Kartik Purnima. Lamps are lit across the ghat front at dusk, around 17:15, and the ghats stay lit for roughly two to three hours.
- What does a Dev Deepawali package cost?
- Our 1 night / 2 days package is ₹11,999 per person and the 2 nights / 3 days is ₹16,999, both twin sharing. Both include hotel, an AC vehicle with a planned drop and pickup point, breakfast and a sunrise boat. The Dev Deepawali evening boat is booked separately.
- Can a vehicle drop me at the ghats that night?
- No. The ghat approaches close to vehicles and are barricaded from the afternoon. Realistic drop points sit well back from the river and the last 20 to 40 minutes are on foot, in a crowd. Any operator promising a drop at Dashashwamedh is not being straight with you.
- Is an evening boat worth it on Dev Deepawali?
- From the water you see the entire lit ghat front at once, which is the image that draws people. From the steps you get the atmosphere and the aarti but only your own stretch. The boat is the one that sells out and climbs steeply in price as the date nears — book it at the same time as the package, not after.
- How far ahead should I book?
- By early October. Ghat-side hotels go first, then the larger vehicles — both commit six to eight weeks ahead for this date. Temple slots for that week want 30 to 45 days.
