Chitrakoot is the Ramayana site most itineraries skip, which is exactly why it is worth the drive. Where Ayodhya is crowded and ceremonial, Chitrakoot is forested, quiet and considerably closer to how a pilgrimage used to feel.

What a brochure would not tell you
The Kamadgiri parikrama is 5 km on foot and is the reason to come. If the group cannot walk that, Chitrakoot loses most of its point and the four days are better spent on the Kashi–Prayagraj–Ayodhya circuit.
When to come
October to March. The monsoon makes the forest spectacular and the tracks difficult. Amavasya days draw very large crowds of pilgrims doing the parikrama.

- How far is Chitrakoot from Varanasi?
- About 260 km, roughly six hours by road. It is usually paired with Vindhyachal or Prayagraj rather than done as a standalone return trip.
- What is the Kamadgiri parikrama?
- A 5 km circuit on foot around the sacred hill at Chitrakoot, taking two to three hours. It is the central ritual of a visit here, and the reason to come rather than to Ayodhya.
- Is Chitrakoot worth visiting from Varanasi?
- If you have four days and have already seen the main circuit, yes — it is quieter and more forested than any other Ramayana site. For a first and only visit to the region, Kashi, Prayagraj and Ayodhya is the better use of the same days.
