Eleven things first-time visitors to Varanasi get wrong

After enough trips you notice the same handful of decisions going wrong, almost always made in good faith by people who read three blogs and booked sensibly. Here they are, with what to do instead.

1. Arriving fifteen minutes before the aarti

The Ganga aarti at Dashashwamedh fills roughly forty-five minutes before it starts. Arrive at 18:00 for an 18:15 ceremony and you will spend it looking at the backs of people who arrived at 17:30. The fix costs nothing: leave earlier.

2. Doing Kashi Vishwanath first thing

It feels right to start with the main temple. But the general darshan queue runs three to six hours on a weekend or festival day, and a long morning queue does not just cost the morning — it pushes everything else into the afternoon heat and past the aarti. Put it in the afternoon, when queues are shorter, or hold a Sugam Darshan slot.

3. Booking a motor boat for the sunrise

The whole point of the dawn river is the quiet. A motor boat is faster, louder, and removes the thing you came for. Take a rowing boat, and take it at 05:45 rather than 07:00.

4. Expecting a vehicle to reach the temple

No vehicle of any size reaches Kashi Vishwanath. Everyone stops at Godowlia and walks about ten minutes through the gali. This is a municipal restriction, not an operator failing, and it applies equally to a Swift Dzire and the most expensive vehicle in the city.

5. Two days, and treating it as three

Two days genuinely covers the temple, the aarti, a sunrise boat and Sarnath — but only if the hours are used deliberately and Sarnath gets an hour rather than the half day it deserves. Three days is the version people are glad they booked.

6. Visiting the Sarnath museum on a Friday

It is closed, and it holds the original Ashokan lion capital — the source of India's national emblem. An itinerary that puts Sarnath on a Friday without mentioning this has quietly cost you the main object at the site.

7. Booking a hotel by distance from the ghats

Ghat-side sounds ideal and often means your vehicle cannot reach the hotel, so every arrival and departure involves a walk with luggage through crowded lanes. Cantt is twenty minutes further out and vastly easier to operate from. Decide deliberately rather than by map pin.

If you are travelling with elders or a lot of luggage, this single decision affects the trip more than any other. Ask specifically how close a vehicle gets to the hotel entrance before booking.

8. Buying a VIP darshan ticket from an operator

Sugam Darshan, Sparsh Darshan, the aartis and Rudrabhishek are booked by the devotee on the Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple Trust's own portal, at the temple's own fees. No travel agent holds a resale allocation. An operator quoting a single price with 'VIP darshan included' and no separate temple fee is worth questioning.

9. Underestimating the 17:00 to 20:00 traffic

Varanasi's evening window roughly doubles any cross-city journey. A 50-minute airport run at noon takes 80 at six. If you have an evening aarti plan and an afternoon flight, the two are in conflict and it is better to know that when booking.

10. Trying to add a second city to a short trip

Varanasi plus Ayodhya in two days means 440 km of driving in the middle of a two-day trip. It is sold constantly and it does not work. Either give it three days or pick one city.

11. Skipping the lanes

Almost every itinerary is a list of temples, and almost every visitor afterwards says the best part was two unhurried hours walking the old city between 07:30 and 09:30, when it is awake but not yet crowded. It is free, it is not on any package, and it is the thing to protect when the schedule tightens.
