A photography itinerary is a different shape from a sightseeing one. It is organised around the two hours after sunrise and the hour before dusk, with the middle of the day given over to the lanes and to rest, because the light between 11:00 and 15:00 is not worth carrying a camera through.

Day 1
Arrive for the evening light
Night in Varanasi
- By 13:00Arrive, check in, scout on foot.
- 16:30Assi Ghat as the light drops — quieter than Dashashwamedh and better for portraits.
- 18:15Ganga aarti. Arrive 45 minutes early for a position with a clear line.
Day 2
Two dawns' worth of work in one
Night in Varanasi
- 05:15Private boat from Dashashwamedh. Rowing, not motor — you can stop where you want.
- 07:30Ashore for the lanes while the light is still low and raking.
- 11:00Rest. The midday light is flat and the heat is not worth it.
- 16:00Ramnagar Fort across the river for the long view back.
- 18:15Second aarti from a boat rather than the steps — a completely different frame.
Day 3
Sarnath and out
- 05:30Final boat, or the lanes at dawn if you have the river already.
- 10:00Checkout and Sarnath — open sky, carved stone, very different from the ghats.
- 15:00Drop at the airport or station.

Who this is not for
Anyone wanting to photograph the cremation ghats up close. Manikarnika and Harishchandra are working cremation grounds, photography there is intrusive and widely resented, and our guides will ask you not to. From the water at a distance is the accepted convention.
