Kashi Vishwanath darshan without losing a day to the queue

Shri Kashi Vishwanath is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas and the reason most people come to Varanasi. It is also where the largest number of trips go wrong, because visitors arrive without understanding how access works.
General darshan is free
It always has been. Nobody needs to pay to enter. What the paid options buy is a shorter queue — and on a weekend or festival day the general queue genuinely runs three to six hours, which is the entire reason they exist.

Nobody can sell you a slot
Sugam Darshan, Sparsh Darshan, the aartis and Rudrabhishek are booked by the devotee, on the trust's own portal, at the trust's own prices. No hotel, cab company or travel agent holds a resale allocation. If an operator quotes you a single price with "VIP darshan included" and never names the temple fee separately, ask why.
Book 30 to 45 days ahead for a festival week. Carry the e-ticket and the original photo ID it was booked against — both are checked at the gate.
What Sugam Darshan actually includes
A separate shorter queue, a Shastri who escorts you to the sanctum, locker use, and Mewa Laddu prasadam. The Shastri's dakshina is covered by the ticket, so nothing more should be payable inside. Differently-abled devotees are not charged.
How close a vehicle gets
Godowlia crossing, or the Maidagin side depending on that day's police diversions — then roughly a ten-minute walk through Vishwanath Gali. This applies to a Swift Dzire and a 49-seater bus equally. It is a municipal restriction on the old city, not a limitation any operator can work around, and anyone promising otherwise is misleading you.
Which aarti to choose
Mangla Aarti at 03:00 is the one regular visitors come back for, and the hardest slot to secure. It means a pickup around 02:00, which sounds punishing and is nonetheless the single most recommended thing on this page. Sapt Rishi at 19:00 is easier to get and pairs naturally with the Ganga aarti at Dashashwamedh afterwards. The mid-day Bhog Aarti is the simplest to combine with a Sarnath afternoon.
Practical notes
- Arrive at least 30 minutes before your slot, at the gate printed on the ticket.
- Phones and leather are not permitted inside; free lockers are available and are included with Sugam Darshan.
- Mondays, Mondays in Shravan, and Mahashivratri are the heaviest days of the year — treat any published queue estimate as optimistic.
- Annapurna Devi temple is adjacent and is normally done in the same walk; add about twenty minutes.
