The thing almost no itinerary mentions
The ghat approaches are closed to vehicles and heavily barricaded from the afternoon. No van, car or tempo traveller is dropping anyone at Dashashwamedh that night, whatever is promised at the point of sale. Realistic drop points sit well back from the river and the last twenty to forty minutes are on foot, in a crowd, after dark.
If an operator tells you their vehicle will drop you at the ghat on Dev Deepawali, they are either inexperienced or not being straight with you. Plan the walk into the evening — especially if elders are in the group.

From the water you see the entire lit ghat front at once, which is the image people travel for. It is also the most aggressively priced thing in Varanasi on this night.

Dev Deepawali boat prices run five to ten times the normal Ganga tariff. That is genuine scarcity — the number of licensed vessels is fixed and the demand lands on one night — but the spread between operators is enormous. Online listings run ₹3,500 to ₹13,000 a head while travellers negotiate seats at the ghat for a few hundred. Both are real; the difference is licensing, a reserved position, and recourse if the boat does not appear.
Boat or steps?
From the water: the full sweep of lit ghats at once, an unobstructed view of the aarti, and an easier exit. From the steps: the bells, the incense, the crowd and the scale of it, but only your immediate stretch of ghat. Neither is wrong. The boat is the one that sells out first and climbs fastest in price.
Where to stand if you are not on a boat
- Dashashwamedh for the main aarti — arrive by 16:30 at the latest for a usable position.
- Assi Ghat is substantially calmer, with its own smaller aarti and a clear view down the lit front.
- Rajendra Prasad Ghat sits beside Dashashwamedh and gets much of the same spectacle with fewer people.
- The far bank gives you the whole panorama at a distance, reached by boat before the river closes.

Is it worth it?
Yes, with a plan. It is the single most visually extraordinary night in a city that has no shortage of them. But it rewards preparation more than any other date in the Varanasi calendar, and people who turn up expecting an ordinary evening with more lights tend to spend it stuck behind a barricade.
